Exhibition Mamoru Kawaguchi - Structural Engineer: Innovation and Tradition in Structural Design

The Exhibition is organised by the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and supported by the IASS (International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures) and the company "CMD Ingenieros SL". It will be held in the UPV Exhibition Centre (Sala de Exposiciones, Edifici Rectorat 3A) from 29th September until 17th November 2009 and is entitled "Mamoru Kawaguchi - Structural Engineer. Innovation and tradition in structural projects".

The exhibition shows a sample of the works by Mamoro Kawaguchi, one of the most exceptional characters in the world of structural projects. Kawaguchi has a PhD in Structural Engineering and an Honorary Degree from Stuttgart University (Germany). He is the author of structural projects for works such as the Yoyogi Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, the Sant Jordi Palace and Tianjin museum, among others, and he also invented the Pantadome system.

The Exhibition contains thirty work models constructed by the engineer, as well as explanatory texts and graphic material showing the structural systems, constructive procedures and conception tools used in his many projects.

This event is parallel to the 50th Anniversary Symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spacial Structures (IASS), which will take place during the last week of September at the UPV.

Building the 3rd Millennium

International Conference on Architecture and Engineering in commemoration of the centenary of Fritz Leonhardt.

Fritz Leonhardt was one of the most important engineers of the 20th century. He is famous not only for his pioneering work on bridges, but also for his high-rise structures such as the Stuttgart television tower (the world’s first TV tower built from reinforced concrete – and the prototype for many other towers of this style). Leonhardt was honorary member of many international organisations and recipient of numerous awards and distinctions like the Freyssinet-Medal from the Féderation Internationale de la Précontrainte, an honorary doctor from Purdue University, the goldmedal from the Institution of Structural Engineers and many more.

In commemoration of the centenary of his birth in July 2009, the University of Stuttgart will host an international conference on recent developments in Architecture and Structural Engineering. The conference is organised under the aegis of the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design.

The symposium will take place from the 15 – 17 July 2009 in Stuttgart, Germany.
